Live Tweeting in Lectures: A Pilot Study

Live tweeting is nowadays common at conferences. This session explores the potential benefits of live tweeting in lectures. During each lecture in the Anti-Social Behaviour: Law, Policy & Practice module students were encouraged to tweet questions, comments and summaries of key points using a unique hashtag.

At the start of the module five potential benefits were identified: making learning more effective; making learning more enjoyable, increased student-student engagement; increased student-lecturer engagement; and, building a useful resource for revision. Student feedback on the extent to which these benefits were achieved was invited during the module (in the form of short diary entries) and at the end of the module (using a ten question survey).

This session will present the findings of the study. It will explain what the students on the module regarded as the principal benefits and drawbacks with live tweeting in lectures and, based on these insights, offer practical suggestions for future practice.
